Our Green Policy

      GREEN POLICY

Europcar Zimbabwe is Zimbabwe’s preferred car hire organisation.  We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods, with regular review points.  The responsibility for managing and maintaining the policy lies with the board of Europcar Zimbabwe and the general implementation has been delegated to all directors.

"Climate change is one of the leading challenges of our age and has already been shown to increase the risk of drought, flooding and extreme weather patterns in many countries of the world. The current evidence indicates that man made greenhouse gas emissions are contributing to this problem.

In recognition of this, we are working with Neutral Solutions to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions with an effective, long-term strategy that is transparent, accurate and scientifically robust. We have just completed Level 1 of their Climate Standard, which recognises that we have accurately measured and reported our greenhouse gas emissions."

Europcar Zimbabwe encourages a reduction in car ownership by providing easily available short term car hire.  Europcar Zimbabwe is working to improve its environmental impact by running smaller-engined, lower carbon vehicles alongside maintaining its current fleet & recycling systems.

Our activity will impact the environment due to the nature of our business.  As an organisation we wish to minimise our impact on the environment as much as possible.

To ensure we maintain our stringent environmental standards we endeavour to:

-       Meet the legal requirements of Zimbabwe’s environmental legislation

-       Set targets to minimise pollution

-       Put a framework in place in which to monitor and review our environmental targets

-       Document and make available to the public our progress in meeting these environmental targets

We aim to reduce our impact on the environment in the following areas:

1.      Energy use (both electrical and fuel based)

2.      Water use

3.      Treatment of waste and rubbish

4.      Our fleet emissions

We are therefore committed to:

§  Minimising our electricity use through energy saving activity such as the use of more energy efficient lighting solutions, turning off machines or lights that are not in use and only filling kettles with the water needed at that time.  We also commit to researching alternative energy sources such as solar power where viable and to only using the generator when necessary absolutely necessary to do so. The energy consumption and efficiency of new products will be taken into account when purchasing.

§  Minimising our emissions from travel by encouraging lift clubs for staff travel ensuring our staff vehicles are maintained rigorously.  We will reduce the need to travel, restricting to necessity trips only.  We will promote the use of travel alternatives such as e-mail or video/phone conferencing.

§  Minimising our water use by ensuring water is recycled after washing fleet vehicles and collected rainwater is used for watering gardens.  Cleaning materials will be as environmentally friendly as possible.

§  Minimising waste by encouraging printing both sides of paper when printing documents, re-using waste paper, recycling rubbish efficiently and using recycled materials wherever possible. We also encourage a culture of sending documents electronically for review, rather than in printed form.  We commit to recycling our used tyres and used engine oils in an environmentally friendly manner.

§  Minimising our fleet’s emissions through education of ‘green’ driving methods to clients, proper servicing, purchasing of low emissions models and researching alternative bio-fuels that may be used where possible.

We commit to setting targets to minimise our impact on the environment, and to reviewing these on an ongoing basis and reporting our progress to stakeholders.

We commit to educating our staff and stakeholders about our environmental policy and initiatives and ensuring that our environmental procedures are followed.  We will involve staff in the implementation of this policy, for greater commitment and improved performance.  We will update this policy at least annually in consultation with staff and other stakeholders where necessary.  We will provide staff with relevant environmental training.

We also endeavour to engage our business partners to ensure that our supply chain is as environmentally aware as possible. We will use local labour and materials where available to reduce C02 and help the community.
